During a catastrophic winter storm the entire city loses power. This story focuses on an underfunded maternity ward on the fourth floor of a public hospital that is completely cut off from the backup generators.
The story explores the harrowing reality of keeping twelve premature babies alive using only fading battery packs, body heat and manual resuscitation. The nurses cannot call for help and the temperature in the ward is dropping rapidly.
The head nurse thought her biggest challenge was the hospital bureaucracy but she is now fighting a terrifying ticking clock to save the most fragile lives in the city.
Think Apollo 13 but set in a freezing hospital ward.
• Frantic, exhausting and incredibly high stakes. The horror is in the failing technology: the beep of a dying battery, the freezing condensation on a window and the terrifying silence of an incubator shutting down.
• The nurses must be shown as fiercely dedicated professionals who are pushed past the limits of human endurance.
