Writer’s Brief | X-Men: The First Tunnel

PROJECT: A Spider-Man Fan Fiction Story

TITLE SUGGESTIONS:

~ The First Tunnel

~ Callisto’s Claim

FORMAT: 2-Part Serial (Approx. 2,000 words per chapter)

AUTHOR: Open to all

GENRE: Urban Survival / Gritty Drama

THE CONCEPT

Before the Morlocks were a vast underground community they were just terrified runaways. This story focuses on Callisto during her desperate search for a safe haven beneath the streets of New York.

The story strips away the colourful superhero tropes to focus on gritty, subterranean survival. Mutants are being hunted by violent street gangs on the surface so Callisto must lead a small, fragile group of outcasts into the pitch-black sewer system to find the abandoned Cold War bunker known as The Alley.

Callisto must sacrifice her own morality and commit brutal acts of violence to secure a home for her broken people.

TONE & STYLE

Think post-apocalyptic survival, The Warriors.

Dark, damp and dangerous. The tension comes from the environment: echoing water, failing flashlights, the freezing cold and the constant fear of what is hiding in the dark.

Callisto must be shown as a reluctant leader who hardens herself into a ruthless protector.

CHAPTER ONE: THE DESCENT

Word Count Target: 2,000 words

Core Focus: The hostile surface world and the perilous journey underground.

SUGGESTED SCENES / BEATS

1.  The Hunted:

Open in a rain-soaked alleyway. Callisto is hiding an injured Caliban and a terrified teenage mutant from a violent anti-mutant street gang. The gang has dogs and baseball bats. Callisto uses her enhanced senses to keep her people one step ahead but they are running out of places to hide.

2.  The Decision:

With the surface world completely hostile Callisto makes a desperate call. She pries open a heavy rusted manhole cover and forces her small group to climb down into the pitch-black storm drains.

3.  The Maze:

The group navigates the labyrinthine tunnels. It is freezing, toxic and pitch black. Caliban’s mutant-tracking ability leads them deeper toward a rumoured massive underground space. The psychological toll of the darkness begins to break the teenager’s mind.

4.  The Squatters (The Cliffhanger):

They finally break through a collapsed brick wall into The Alley, a massive, dry Cold War bunker. But it is not empty. A heavily armed gang of human criminals is using it as a stash house. The criminals rack their shotguns, trapping Callisto and her helpless friends.

CHAPTER TWO: THE SANCTUARY

Word Count Target: 2,000 words

Core Focus: Callisto’s brutal transformation into a leader and claiming the territory.

SUGGESTED SCENES / BEATS

1.  The Parley:

Callisto tries to negotiate. She begs the gang leader to let them stay in a small corner of the massive bunker. The leader laughs, mocks their mutations and prepares to execute Caliban to send a message.

2.  The Strike:

Callisto realises that peace is impossible in this world. She unleashes her full combat abilities. Moving faster than human eyes can track she disarms the leader and plunges the bunker into total darkness by smashing the generator lights.

3.  The Shadow War:

A tense, terrifying game of cat and mouse in the pitch-black bunker. Callisto uses her enhanced night vision to hunt the gang members one by one. She uses brutal, lethal force. She is no longer just surviving; she is conquering.

4.  The Queen (The Ending):

The final gang member flees screaming into the tunnels. Callisto stands bleeding in the centre of the massive, empty bunker. She brings Caliban and the teenager out of hiding. She tells them this is their home now. The chapter ends with Callisto staring into the dark tunnels, knowing she will have to kill again and again to protect this sanctuary.
